Studio Life

Ross Dickson is a visual artist from Northern Ireland, living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland. He approaches his practice as a material culture, allowing him to be discoverer, explorer, artist, archaeologist and observer. By utilizing a hybrid way of making, he works collaboratively with deeply physical and ‘naturally expressive’ materials while using digital 3D visualisations to explore virtual realms and expand fictional contexts. Each of his works is much like a Landform or Landmass; erosional traces, scale, formation, orientation and the interplay between the natural and manmade, all become key points of focus. His studio acts as a source, archaeological dig, or nebula in which emergences of detritus, material stratification and complex formations of found and made objects arise. Also Recreating parts of the studio within his works.

He incorporates an interest in geology, archaeology, museology, nature and prehistoric cultures into his sculptural practice. Often borrowing terminology and attributes of visual languages from these fields to better describe the ongoing material interactions within his work. Recently Dickson has been exploring the use of ancient complexes as an artistic material. The ancient practice of object gathering inspires the visual relationships and the position of human expression within his works. He works in collaboration with the multiplicity of non-human entities in his landforms. Creating speculative spaces filled with enigma, process and havens of material cultures.
